We have had a blast today!

 is such a yummy letter.

We have been doing lots with yachts.

Yesterday we designed our yachts with plasticine.
Today we made sails and did our first test to see if they would FLOAT or... SINK.

Sinking!

Sinking!

We have one that floats!

More testing.

Some sunk and we had a couple that floated.
We wondered why and what we needed to do to make them float.

We decided to go back and change our designs.
We thought we needed larger and flatter bottoms and the plasticine spread out so that the weight was 'thinner'.

Drying out before we head off and redesign our yachts.

We reworked our designs and did a second test to see if they floated or sunk...

Final alterations to the designs!

Quick - final changes!

Carlisle's ready!

Jamal's ready.
Eve's making final changes.

First to go - it's a sinker!

Sunk!

Sunk!

A floater!

It sunk!

Another floater!

Sunk!

Emma has managed to come up with a successful design each time.
Ka Pai Emma!

Sunk! But.. it's got Zade thinking about what he needs to do.

Sunk!

Sunk!

Sunk!

Sunk!
Carlisle has a plan for the 3rd design though!

Out 3 floaters.
These girls are going to join forces tomorrow and are going to build a bigger yacht.

Umm...
Which are successful floaters and why?
What do we need to do?

We are going back to rework and change our designs tomorrow.

Ollie showed us a really clever experiment today.
Thanks for sharing Ollie - you did a fantastic job.

Ollie and his assistant, Lydia.

The first pencil is in successfully.

AMAZING!!!

Ollie takes questions.

Out some the pencils.

Out comes the water.

Super work Ollie!
Thanks for sharing.

We wondered how it happened?
The bag hugs the pencil and holds the water tight.

Snacks - Healthy Please!
Room 4 have a morning snack at 10:00am
Our next food break isn't until lunch time at 1:00pm

This is a long time for us to last if we haven't had a good morning tea snack.

Between 10:00am and 1:00pm we do lots of learning.
We also have morning break and we do lots and lots of running.
We need a good morning tea to keep us going!

We have a quick fruit snack in the afternoon.

I can't wait to see who has successful floating yachts tomorrow.

Thanks Ollie for being such a 'Star' this week.
Ollie was so organised with books, stickers and Quality Work stickers.
He had everything organised and ready to go each day.
Ka Pai Ollie!

I wonder who the 'Star of the Week' for Week 5 will be...

The Letter of the Week is...

This is a tricky letter.

News can be about anything!
News doesn't have to relate to the Letter of the Week.
It would be good if it wasn't a toy or something the children have shared before.
You can email photos or images to me for the children to present via the big screen. rach@opawa.school.nz

Oral language features.
We are learning to present our news clearly by using:
o     Eye contact
o     Volume & projection
o     Clarity of speech
o     Tone – expression & gestures
o     Good pace
o     Confidence

Questioning.
We are learning about asking good questions – thick/fat questions rather than skinny questions.
We will be able to do this when we:
o     Know the difference between a question and a statement.
o     Can think of appropriate questions to ask.
o     Can ask questions to gain more information.
o     Can ask a, who; what; where; when; why; how question.

o     Can ask a ‘fat’/‘thick’ question to find out more.

Room 4 is also starting a Mystery Bag!
This is part of Oral Language.

Our 'Star of the Week' will start this on Monday.
They will be the first person to take the bag home, write some clues about their 'Mystery Item' and bring it back to school so that we can all be Detectives.
We need to try and work out what is in the 'Mystery Bag' by asking really good questions!

The 'Star of the Week' gets to choose someone else to take the Mystery Bag home on Tuesday.

We are really looking forward to this!

What's on for Week 5?
Monday
Bring a 2L plastic bottle if you can.
It needs to have a skinny neck like a soda water bottle.

The fire was amazing and the performers made it sound just like and instrument.
They had a good rhythm going!

Check out the flames!

We had a lot of fun in Room 4 this week!
Lisa reading a story to us.

Getting the porridge ready for the 3 Bears.

Shantaliya and Eve had a creative time with the blocks and ponies.

The boys love working together with the cars, blocks and maths equipment to invent roads and games.

James was very busy building on the car mat.

Gave loves the trucks and diggers.

We are really lucky to have this castle in Room 4.
Everyone is great at sharing it.
